SWEDES SADDEN AFTER LOSS TO AVILA

Kansas City, MO.- The Bethany College Swedes were on the road at Avila University hosting their rescheduled double header against the Eagles, Wednesday, April 23rd starting at 2pm.

Game 1: The Swedes came into this series knowing it was going to be a battle from the jump and that was proven to be the case. The Eagles took a quick lead over Bethany in the first two innings after multiple stolen bases put runners in scoring position.  The Swedes were down 0-3 going into the 3rd inning. Bethany managed to slow the momentum down a bit for Avila but they scored again the 3rd and, in the 4th, giving them a 0-6 lead over the Swedes. The Swedes finally were able to score in the bottom of the 4th after a single to right center field by Tamia Butler gave way for Abigail Nitzel to score, 1-6. Bethany held the Eagles from scoring in the top of the 5th inning and were back to gaining necessary momentum at bat. Samantha Gomez hit a single to center field and Maggie Heath was given the green light to head home, 2-6. Unfortunately, that would be the final run for the Swedes. The final score, Swedes-2, Eagles-7 after a late run scored in the 7th.

MacKenzie McCaslin started in the circle for Bethany and faced 18 batters and threw 28 strikes out of 58 pitches. Paris Hammer relieved McCaslin and faced 16 batters and threw 35 strikes out of 62 pitches to finish out Game 1.

Game 2: Similar to the first game, the Swedes struggled early in the game to hold off the Eagles who would score in the 2nd, 3rd, and the 4th innings. Avila scored one run in the 2nd inning, one run in the 3rd inning, and three runs in the 4th inning. The Swedes found themselves down by five heading into the final innings of the game. Bethany held the Eagles from scoring again the game but the lead still stood at five as the Swedes came into the bottom of the 7th. Desperate to score, Destiny Espinosa singled to center field allowing Tamia Butler to score, 1-5. But that would be the final run scored, the final score, Swedes-1, Eagles-5.

Ayana Revels was on the mound to start for Bethany in Game 2 and faced 18 batters and threw 34 strikes out of 72 pitches. Dylann Baker came into relieve Revels and faced 14 batters and threw 34 strikes out of 48 pitches to finish out Game 2.
