TERRENCE “TERRY” MURPHY NAMED NEW HEAD MEN'S BASKETBALL COACH FOR THE SWEDES
LINDSBORG, KAN. – The Bethany College Athletics Department has announced that Terrence "Terry" Murphy will be taking the reins of the men's basketball program as the position opened recently. Coach Murphy was previously serving as the assistant men's basketball coach as well as a game management assistant for the Swedes over the past year.
"We are very excited to have Terry Murphy as our Head Men's Basketball Coach. Coach Murphy has been an integral part of the progress in our men's basketball program over the past year, and we are confident he will lead the program to continued progress and success," said Dean of Athletics, Laura Moreno.
Coach Murphy has an extensive coaching history from high school to college, professional, and various national teams in Ukraine. While coaching, he has won 14 different championships at different levels since 2007, and has coached former NBA, NBA G League, and EuroLeague players.
"His elite level coaching experience, genuine care for inspiring and leading young men, and commitment to holistic growth and development through academics, community engagement, and the game of basketball make Coach Murphy a great fit for Bethany College," said Moreno. "We are thrilled to have him as a Swede and look forward to the future of Bethany Basketball!"
Ever since Coach Murphy's arrival at Bethany College, the Swedes have done nothing but improve the program tripling the win total from the year before as well as improving statistically in virtually every way including points per game, field goal percentage, free throw percentage, opponents' turnovers per game, and rebounds per game.
"I am thankful for the opportunity to lead the Bethany men's basketball program and hope to continue the momentum and upward trajectory established both on and off the court this past season," said newly-named Head Coach Terry Murphy.
This year, Coach Murphy helped lead the Swedes to upset victories over NCAA Division II Colorado Christian University and eventual KCAC tournament winner University of Saint Mary. He also helped lead the Swedes to key late-season wins over Bethany's longtime rivals, Kansas Wesleyan University and McPherson College.
Terry Murphy earned his Bachelor of Business Administration (B.B.A.) in Management at Texas A&M University. He went on to acquire his Master of Arts (M.A.) in Education with a concentration in Sport Leadership and Coaching from Michigan State University.
Coach Murphy currently resides in Lindsborg, Kan. with his wife Ruth. They have three children and two grandchildren.
