TAMU-TEXARKANA & BAKER TENNIS RECAP
LINDSBORG, KAN. - On March 9th, the Swedes returned home after a short night to host a double header. Their first matches of the day were against Texas A&M - Texarkana, followed by a dual with Baker University.
On the women's side doubles were competitive, highlighted by a 5-7 loss at #1 (Mistereck/Marquez), but the Swedes were unable to collect any wins. The shorthanded men faced the same situation, leading to both teams entering singles down 0-1.
In singles, both teams were only able to pick up a single point; the men at #2 (Hernandez Colman) and the women at #4 (Marquez). Both of these matches were won in three sets. Other close battles could be found at #2 (Mistereck) and #5 (Russom) for the women. Final scores for both teams were 1-6 in favor of the visitors.
After a short break, the Swedes turned around to play the visiting Wildcats. The women were able to collect the doubles point against the short-handed visitors, winning at all three spots. The men, playing the equally short-handed visitors, split doubles.
In Singles, the men picked up wins at #2 (Hernandez Colman) and #4 (Rico Moran). The Women picked up singles points at #2 (Mistereck), #3 (Metro), and #4 (Marquez), as well as defaults at #5 & #6. Final score for the men was a 2-3 loss. For the women, a 6-1 win.
Coach DeWitt on Saturday's matches: "I thought our kids played hard. I think the reschedule to last night, and finishing at 2:15 in the morning, definitely hurt us today. As fun as that way, I wish we'd have been able to play at 3:00 and get some normal rest before these two matches. Against Texarkana I was happy with how we showed up; Franco and Piper getting three-set wins was great. I thought Maria and Makenna also had great battles, just came up a little short this time. I thought we came out pretty sloppy against Baker. I'm sure a lot of that is fatigue, but I certainly wish we'd have played better. Franco's third three-setter in about 18 hours was pretty impressive, and it was good to get Alejandro a solid win. The women had a good day too, in spite of the tired legs. I thought Sofia played especially well at number one, even with her three-set loss. We'll take a few days off to rest and hopefully be sharper next week. Those will be important matches."
The Swedes play next next Saturday, March 16 at Evangel University in Springfield, MO. Go Swedes!
