SWEDES FALL IN THREE
Newton, Kan. – The Bethany Swedes traveled to North Newton to battle against the Bethel College Threshers in their conference opener, Tuesday September 19.
The Swedes were without their starting varsity setter, outside hitter, and libero for this match due to injuries. Never the less, Bethany rallied behind their starters for the opening of set one. The Threshers got ahead with an early lead at 6-2. The Swedes responded by closing the gap at 8-9. Bethel got hot and extended their lead late into the set at 20-12. Bethany needed to regroup in order of keeping their chances alive at taking the set. Madison McGuire set the tone as she earned a kill, giving the Swedes a chance to go on offense. Bethany took that chance and ran with it closing in on the Threshers at 18-23. Unfortunately, the Swedes weren't able to overcome the deficient, giving the Threshers an early lead in the match.
At the start of set two, Bethel came out swinging, earning a lead of 7-2 on the Swedes. Bethany unable to respond fell further in the hole at 4-12. The Threshers continued to be merciless and dominated the net extending the lead to 17-7. The Swedes struggled to get any momentum started for them, losing the second set 9-25.
That struggle followed the Swedes into the third and deciding set. The Threshers ended up sweeping the Swedes 25-13.
