BOTH MEN & WOMEN FALL TO MCPHERSON
Lindsborg, Kan. - On April 3 the tennis teams traveled to McPherson College to play the host school at their new tennis facility.
The underdog Swedes went toe-to-toe with their opponents at several spots before eventually dropping both team competitions to the Bulldogs.
In both doubles lineups, the Swedes were unable to secure a victory, snapping a winning streak for the #1 women's team of Jahzuena Bradshaw-Douglas and Piper Marquez.
In singles, the #21 Ranked Bulldog Men were able to overwhelm the tired and beat-up Swedes. At #2, Zeke Mumford put up a drawn-out battle, eventually losing 4 and 2 to his opponent.
The women fared better, picking up a third straight KCAC win at #4 from Piper Marquez (7-5, second set withdrawal) and #6 Riley Ahlstedt (Default). They also lost two tight, three-set battles at #3 from Maria Mistereck (6-4, 3-6, 3-6) and #5 Tia Gregory (6-4, 3-6, 6-10). The end result for the day was a 0-7 loss for the men and a 2-5 loss for the women.
After the match, Coach DeWitt had this to say: "I'm really happy with our kids. After doubles, I challenged them a little, I felt like they weren't competing as well as we have the past several days. They really took it to heart and battled all though singles. When you're playing a team as solid as Mac, you can't afford to take games off, and our kids really did well staying focused and driven. This would have been a perfect day to relax; we were the underdog, we are tired and several of us are playing injured, but our kids didn't fall into that trap. They competed really well and should be proud of themselves. I really am especially excited about how our women played singles; none of their opponents were given a free match, and really had to earn their wins today. Piper, especially, played a heckuva first set before her opponent got dinged up. Tia and Maria also had great matches; a few points go differently today and they both come home winners too. Overall, I'm happy with how we played. We've showed we're capable of playing at this level, now we need to go win some matches."
The losses drop the Men to 3-10 (1-4 KCAC) and the Women to 4-9 (1-3 KCAC).
