BETHANY INVITATIONAL RECAP
LINDSBORG, KAN. - On September 8 & 9 Bethany College hosted the 3rd Annual Bethany Invitational Tennis Tournament. The Swedes were excited to host 106 Men and Women's players for their season-opening bash. Matches were played at the Lindquist Tennis Center on Bethany's campus as well as the Ron Dahlsten Tennis Complex at Smoky Valley High School. A total of six doubles draws (three each gender) and thirteen singles draws organized the players for the weekend.
Play began with doubles on Friday afternoon. Highlights of the evening included:
- Freshmen Abby Veile (Independence) and Kyla Metro (Odin) advancing to the Consolation Finals of the Women's A Draw before daylight cancelled matches. A great finish after a very tough round one draw.
- Senior Tia Gregory and Junior Piper Marquez (both Independence) and Freshmen Karee Adam (Smolan) and Makenna Russom (Phillipsburg) all advanced to the Consolation finals of the B Draw, also ending their day as sunlight faded. Great recoveries from both teams.
- Sophomore Riley Ahlstedt (Lindsborg) and Freshman Ella McNett (Larned) advanced to the finals of the C Draw. Freshmen Kami Reichenberger (Wellington) and MaKenna Wellbrock (Victoria) advanced to the 3rd place match in the C Draw. Strong starts to the season for all four ladies.
- Junior Zeke Mumford (Evanston Park, Australia) and Freshman Alejandro Rico Moran (Heredia, Costa Rica) finished 3rd place in the Men's B Draw. A great start for a new pairing.
On Saturday, the teams reconvened for a full day of singles play at both sites. Highlights from Saturday included:
- Kyla Metro won the Consolation Championship of the Women's B Draw after losing to eventual runner-up Tara Stewart of Tabor. A solid-all around showing for the Freshman from Central Plains High School.
- Alejandro Rico Moran won 3rd place in the Men's C Draw. He was able to upset the #2 Seed in his draw on his way to the strong finish. A great weekend for the second-semester freshman to get his fall season started.
- Abby Veile won runner-up in the Women's C Draw, starting her singles career with a bang. Piper Marquez overcame a tough first round loss to win the Consolation side of the bracket, going 4-1 on the day. Both players' only loss was to Champion Bethan Gill of Division II Fort Hays State University. A solid showing from both Independence High grads.
- Kami Reichenberger earned 4th place in the Women's E Draw. She was unfortunately fighting an injury throughout the tournament and was unable to finish the day. She was off to a strong start to the tournament before her early exit. The weekend was certainly an exciting start to her career as well.
- Kohen Munson (Freshman, Texas City, TX) finished 4th in the Men's E Draw. A solid start to his time at Bethany as well.
- Freshman Amare Campbell (Lyons) was able to battle through the back side of the Men's F Draw, winning the Consolation Championship in his first tournament.
- Ella McNett started her Bethany tennis career with a 3rd place finish in the Women's F Draw. Her only loss on the day was to the eventual champion of her flight in a 6-8 battle. A great start to her year as well.
Coach DeWitt had this to say at the end of Saturday's matches: "Overall I was happy with what we did this weekend. I thought our freshmen especially came out strong and played well after some first match jitters. As a whole I think we were able to showcase our depth on the women's side. I'm also very excited about how Alejandro played all weekend. He came back from summer break in very good shape and has been playing solid tennis. He and Zeke had a good day of doubles, and then he came back out and kept it rolling in singles. The next few weeks could be a lot of fun, we just need to keep working and getting better across the board."
