SWEDES GET THE SWEEP IN DAY 1 OF TURFS UP CLASSIC

Branson, MO.- The Bethany College Swedes were on the road in Branson, MO. for the Turfs Up Classic held at Branson RecPlex, Monday, February 24th for two days of double headers. Day 1, started off with Hannibal-LaGrange University starting at 10am where the Swedes got their first win. Next on the docket was William Woods University where the Swedes earned their second win and a clean sweep for the day.

Game 1: The Swedes came out hungry to start the day off right, scoring their first run in the bottom of the first. Abigail Taylor singled to center field which brought home Kalee Aguilar and brought the score to 1-1 going into the top of the second inning. The Trojans struggled after earning their first run until later into the game, however, Bethany would continue to bring runners around and put points on the board for the first four innings. Abigail Nitzel managed to score in the bottom of the second inning bringing the score to 2-1. Next, Shantell Evans would hit a bomber to give the Swedes a two-run advantage, 3-1 in the bottom of the third inning. The Trojans would have a response to the Swedes' momentum, scoring on an error in the top of the fourth, 3-2. But Bethany would turn around and extended their lead which would go unanswered. Maggie Heath, Abigail Nitzel, Shantell Evans, and Destiny Espinosa would all score in the bottom of the 4th inning. No more runs were scored making the final score, 7-2, the Swedes win by five.

Dylann Baker started in the circle for Bethany and faced 30 batters and threw 68 strikes out of 106 pitches.

Game 2: Bethany started off steady against William Woods with scoring their first run in the top of the second inning after both teams were quiet in the first inning. Shantell Evans was brought home after a single by Megan O'Neal to left field, 1-0. The Owls would struggle to find a response to the Swedes while Bethany would continue to extend their lead. Top of the third, Shantell Evans would double to left center to bring home Destiny Espinosa, 2-0. Next Ulissa Rivas would hit a two-run homerun to left center in the top of the fifth inning bringing the score to 4-0. Top of the seventh inning, Ulissa Rivas would hit another dinger this time to center field with Shantell Evans on base, the Swedes up by six, 6-0. The Owls would try to make a comeback and would earn a run in the bottom of the 7th but it wouldn't be enough. Final score 6-1, the Swedes win by five.

Jessie Garcia was on the mound for Bethany and faced 27 batters and threw 72 strikes out of 111 pitches.

Bethany will be back at Branson RecPlex for Day 2 of the Turfs Up Classic facing the Eccelsia College Royals in Game 1 starting at 10am and the Cottey College Comets in Game 2 scheduled for 12pm, Tuesday, February 25th.
