SWEDES’ SOFTBALL SIGNS OFF AFTER COMPLETING SUSPENDED GAME
Lindsborg, Kan.- The Bethany College Swedes hosted the Kansas Wesleyan University Coyotes, Tuesday, April 22th in their final home double header. Game 1 was completed while Game 2 was suspended due to weather and was scheduled to resume Friday, April 25th and was completed.
Game 1: The first of two games started with a burst of excitement with the Swedes scoring two runs in the first inning, 2-0. The Coyotes quickly responded and the game turned into a shootout. At the end of the 2nd inning the score was 3-5 with Bethany down by two. But that didn't stand for long as the Swedes scored again in the 3rd inning and tied up the game at 5-5. After holding Kansas Wesleyan to another scoreless inning, Bethany took the lead in the 4th inning after scoring one run. Shantell Evans had the sacrifice flyout to the second baseman and Vryah Morgan scored, 6-5. Top of the 5th, the Coyotes managed to take back the lead and scored three runs, 6-8. The Swedes tried to make a comeback after Abigail Nitzel was walked with bases loaded sending Maggie Heath home, 7-8. Unfortunately, Bethany wouldn't be able to gain any more momentum with the final score being 7-8 in favor of the Coyotes.
Dylann Baker started on the mound for the Swedes and faced 30 batters and threw 82 strikes out of 130 pitches before being relieved by Ayianna Revels. Ayianna Revels faced 5 batters and threw 9 strikes out of 15 pitches.
Game 2: The second game started in opposite fashion from the first game with neither team scoring for the first five innings. However, the weather would complicate things when lightning was detected and the game suspended. The game was scheduled to resume Friday, April 25th at 1pm. Picking up where things left off, the Swedes looked to quickly score without success. The Coyotes would go on to score two runs in the top of the 6th and a one run in the top of the 7th inning. Bethany tried to counter to stay alive in the game and force extra innings but wouldn't quite be able to do so. The final score was Swedes-0, Coyotes-3. The Swedes finished out their season with a record of 16-27 overall.
Jordyn Stelzig started in the circle for Bethany and faced 27 batters and threw 75 strikes out of 125 pitches before being relieved by Dylann Baker. Dylann Baker faced 3 batters and threw 9 strikes out of 13 pitches.
