
SWEDES SOAR PAST EAGLES IN DOUBLE DIGIT WIN
Lindsborg, Kan.- Bethany College hosted the Avila University Eagles, Saturday, January 20, 2024 in Hahn Gymnasium. The Swedes are coming into the contest on a three-game winning streak and a conference record of 7-4 while the Eagles are 5-6 in conference play.
1st: The Swedes came out strong in the first quarter, shooting 63.3% and outscoring the Eagles 22-15. Avila was first on the board but Bethany was quick to follow and took their first lead at 8-6 after two successful free throws by Lauren Gleason and 6:23 left to play. The Eagles responded by tying up the game two more times before the Swedes broke away and went on a run. The score at the end of the first quarter was 22-15 in favor of Bethany.
2nd: Beginning of the second quarter, would be a slow start for both teams who struggled to score until Kylie Dunn made a layup for the Swedes, 24-15, with 6:34 on the clock. Bethany extended their lead to 16 with the help of Kisa Unruh and her successful three pointer at 5:34 left, score 31-15. Bethany continued to pressure Avila and dominated the court as time was winding down. The Swedes went into halftime, leading by 15, score was 36-21.
3rd: The third quarter would be the most dominating quarter by the Swedes, outscoring the Eagles, 21-8 and shooting 40%. With the help of Emily Green, Jaden Newfarmer, and Kylie Dunn, Bethany would extend their lead to 20, 44-24 with 6:49 on the clock. Unfortunately for Avila, they couldn't break their scoring drought which last for almost six minutes. The Swedes continued to hit shots and further extend their commanding lead. The score at the end of the third quarter was 57-29, Swedes up by 28.
4th: The Swedes started the fourth quarter with a quick three pointer by Martina Aeschliman, assisted by Lauren Gleason, 60-32, with 9:28 left to play. Bethany would go on a scoring drought after which would last until two successful free throws by R'Manie Pulling, 62-36, with 6:06 on the clock. The Swedes would score only seven more points in the fourth quarter. Final score 69-47 in favor of Bethany. This marks a four-game winning streak for Head Coach Sarah Bartel and the Lady Swedes.
Notable stats include, R'Manie Pulling with 12 points, Hannah Banko with 8 points, Lauren Gleason with 10 rebounds and 6 points, Jaden Newfarmer with 9 rebounds and 10 points, Emily Green with 3 assists and 2 steals, and Kylie Dunn with 9 points, 3 assists, 1 block, and 5 steals.
