TENNIS VS JOHN BROWN RECAP

LINDSBORG, KAN. - On March 8th, the Swede Tennis teams hosted the John Brown University tennis players at Genesis Health Clubs, Salina. Due to bad weather conditions and indoor scheduling the match was moved from 3:00 to 8:00 pm. Both teams were evenly matched and play continued until after 2:00 am.

 

On the Men's side, the Swedes were shorthanded with some players attending the annual choir retreat. The remaining players battled and put on a show throughout the night, combining for three three-set matches out of five played. In the end, the Swedes lost 2-5 after giving a few free points to the visitors, but as a group competed well. Highlights include Franco Hernandez Colman's (Sr) three set win, as well as Alejandro Rico Moran's (So) three set, come-from-behind win. Zeke Mumford lost in three against his Nationally-ranked opponent at #1, Hudson Dick.

 

For the Women, the fireworks continued and another three three-set matches were played. After losing the doubles point, the Swedes traded singles matches, eventually losing 3-4 to the visitors. Highlights for the women include Kyla Metro (Fr) winning her three set match that included tiebreakers in every set, Piper Marquez (Sr) winning in three as well, and Tia Gregory (Sr) winning in straight sets.

 

Coach DeWitt, on the losses: "Obviously we want to win team matches as often as possible, but I can't say enough about how we competed tonight. Nearly everyone on the team played near their peak for at least part of their individual matches, and we were able to put on a show for the families and friends who came out to watch. I think anytime you play a combined 9 tiebreakers in a single match you can be happy with how things go. Six singles matches going three will probably bite us in the tail tomorrow, but I'm overall happy with how tonight went."

 

The Swedes play a double-header at home tomorrow, March 9, at the Lindquist Tennis Center. At 10:00 will be Texas A&M Texarkana, and at 5:00 will be Baker.
