EAGELS ETCH WIN OVER SWEDES IN 5 SET FINALE
Kansas City, MO. - Bethany College was on the road, Friday October 18th, at Avila University to take on the Eagles in a weekday matchup. The match would extend to extra sets and would end in a nail-biting finale leaving the Swedes devasted.
Set 1: The night was kicked off with a win over the Eagles in the JV match with the Swedes winning 2-1. Varsity got started with set 1 going into extra points after both teams went point for point with one another and only allowing the biggest lead to be two at 14-16. Unfortunately, Avila would make two critical moves to gain the advantage and take the first set, 26-28.
Set 2: The second set started like the first with neither team allowing the other one to gain much momentum without a stop until the 9-9 mark when the Swedes went on a run. Bethany would lead by five going into the final points of the set where they would take the set, 25-18.
Set 3: The third set mimicked the first two sets with points going back and forth between teams until the Eagles were able to extend a lead to four at 13-17. The Swedes tried to chip away at the deficient but it only grew until Bethany was down by six at 15-21. The damage didn't last long as the Swedes made a comeback and the set was tied at 23-23. Avila managed to gain the advantage after the set was forced into extra points and took the set, 25-27.
Set 4: Down 2-1 in the match, the Swedes needed to take the fourth set to force a fifth for the chance to win the match. Fortunately, they were able to do just that after breaking the back and forth scoring pattern at 13-13. Bethany took the lead and extended it to five at 18-13. This would be critical for the Swedes as the Eagles were trying to rally a comeback. The Swedes took the fourth set, 25-23.
Set 5: The Swedes quickly went to work to establish a healthy lead before switching sides at 8-3. From there, Bethany held off the Eagles comeback until they reached their match point at 14-9 when the wheels came off. Avila managed to tie the set at 14-14. The Eagles continued to push and they gained the advantage and then the match point at which the final score was 14-16.
